The Opus Project is how I am educating myself about the history of music, one band or artist or composer at a time.  Feel free to browse and add your thoughts about the artists I have reviewed.

What you’ll find here

EPISODES (see links above) are the synopses of the bands/artists/composers I have reviewed.  They go in reserve chronological (and numerical order), and are tagged by genre and sub-genre (according to me…).

LISTS are listicles of musical things to amuse myself.

STATS is the analysis of the bands/artists/composers I cover — dates, countries, genres, etc.

CONNECTIONS is a list of musical bits that echo, evoke, mimic, copy or were directly inspired by other pieces of music.

STAR TREK is unrelated to music, but provides a place for me to post my reviews of re-watching Star Trek series.

Why do I do this?

It started with Led Zeppelin.  I was over-saturated having listened to their albums a million times. I mused — what if I listened in order as if I were hearing them for the first time?  Would I hear or learn something new?  I did.

So I continued.  Next: The Who and the Rolling Stones, which combined the “as if I were hearing them for the first time” thing with actually hearing some of their albums for the first time.  Thus, I was going deeper.  And then wider.

The first 25 episodes were all done from my personal collection (which included electronic files gifted by friends).  After that I started supplementing my stash with what was available on YouTube.  This got me to episode 142.  But then I subscribed to Spotify, which opened up vast horizons of possibility.  I don’t know when I’ll stop, but if I ever feel compelled to do Chicago, that will clearly be the time to end this.
