442. Suicidal Tendencies

(October 2022) Episode 442 is SUICIDAL TENDENCIES.  I normally dislike fusion in music, but the punk-thrash crossover of Suicidal Tendencies works for me. And it works very well, combining the technical proficiency of thrash metal and the audience-oriented voice of punk. I favored their first album as iconic, although I generally prefer the later metal sound. Despite, or maybe because of, several lineup changes their sound adapts well through nü and funk metal phases.

Favorite album: Suicidal Tendencies (also check out its semi-remake Still Cyco After All These Years for a more metal treatment)

Favorite song: Disco’s Out, Murder’s In

Recommendation: should be in both your punk and thrash playlists

228. Primus

(August 2019) Episode 228 is PRIMUS. It’s difficult to label their unique meld of funk-metal with Zappa-esque irreverence and weirdness. But they’ve influenced scores of bands nevertheless. What stands out the most are the sparks flying off Les’ bass, but don’t discount Ler’s calisthenics on guitar.  It’s an acquired taste, but a fun ride when you take it for a spin.

Favorite album: Sailing the Seas of Cheese

Favorite song: Jerry Was a Race Car Driver

176. Red Hot Chili Peppers

(July 2018) I have completed episode 176 of my “opus project.” This edition: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. Many excellent songs. But overall, the sum does not equal the (funk + rock + punk + jazz) parts. Their early stuff was ground-breaking (esp. Get Up and Jump). Everything after Californication is boring. In the 1980s, you’d put on their latest album to show how punk you were. In the 1990s, you’d put on their latest album to show you were edgier than your friends who listened to Gin Blossoms and Dave Matthews. In the 2000s, you put on their latest album to show that you once thought of yourself as punk and edgy.

Favorite album: One Hot Minute

Favorite song: Give It Away

Special sauce: Flea
