395. Alice in Chains

(March 2022) Episode 395 is ALICE IN CHAINS.  I’m shocked I didn’t listen to them more back in the day, as arguably the heavy metal-est of the grunge bands. Maybe because they were ubiquitous on the radio (an amazing number of these songs gave me 90s flashbacks).  Or because I never took to the dual low-range vocals, which is distinctive. But it has aged well, and it is heavy and enjoyed at volume.

Recommendation: don’t exclude from your 90s mix

351. Mudhoney

(August 2021) Episode 351 is MUDHONEY. I started this one while in the Seattle area.  They were delivering the grunge sound before the other Seattle-based bands who got more famous. I didn’t have Mudhoney in my playlist back then but I’m sure there are devotees who rank them above the others. They have a comparatively more punkish sound and sensibility and have been durable.

Favorite album: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge

Favorite song: Thorn

Recommendation: pretty core if you like any grunge stuff

150. Pearl Jam

(December 2017) I have completed episode 150 of my “opus project,” in which I listen to a band’s full discography. This edition: PEARL JAM. Pearl Jam was never a big part of my 1990s although stuff from their first 2-3 albums was on the radio all the time.

Favorite album: Ten

Favorite song: Corduroy

132. Hole

(July 2017) I have completed episode 132 of my “opus project,” in which I listen to a band’s full discography. This edition: HOLE. That first album is a remarkable work of beautiful noise. For those who may not recall, this was the band fronted by Courtney Love.

Favorite album: Pretty on the Inside
